Enzyme Research

Studies have shown that as we age we lose the ability to produce enzymes. At the age of 30 we are producing up to 13% percent fewer enzymes then we were at the age of 20. As each decade passes we produce 10% less. By the age of 50 we are producing less then half of the amounts of enzymes that we were producing at the ages of 20 or 30. Without the proper amount of enzymes in our system, we may develop digestive issues such as weight gain, diabetes, and other diseases.

The body may be deficient in both digestive and metabolic enzymes. With supplementation, we can supply the body with digestive enzymes, but not with metabolic enzymes. Only the body can produce metabolic enzymes. We can help with a metabolic enzyme deficiency by supporting the body's need for digestion enzymes. By taking digestive enzymes with meals, and in between meals, we can reduce stress to the systems that produce enzymes and will aid the body in producing more metabolic enzymes, thus reducing the deficiency.

Besides being important catalysts, enzymes are:

  • Needed for every chemical reaction that takes place in the body
  • Connected to every working organ in our body and run our life's processes
  • Needed by vitamins and minerals to accomplish their delivery within the body
  • Required by all food for digestion
  • Destroyed by cooking and processing food
  • Part of the prevention process, keeping partially digested proteins from putrefying, carbohydrates from fermenting, and fats from turning rancid without our systems
  • Derived from plant based source become active as soon as they enter the body
  • From an animal source are only active within the small intestine in an alkaline setting of 8.0 pH.

Enzymes are a gentle and general digestive aid and can be used for digestive discomfort, for loss of enzymes due to the natural process of aging, and to help balance the body. Specific kinds of enzymes will help with bloating, cramps, gas, and diarrhea after consuming meals with dairy (lactose intolerance). Enzymes can also relieve gastric or duodenal ulcer, Crohn's disease, and unexplained blood in urine, gastritis, heartburn, diarrhea, mucous congestion, diverticulosis, and colitis. Certain enzymes can help with allergies, blood sugar imbalances, cold hands and feet, skin eruptions, upset stomach, high carbohydrate diets associated with indigestion or gas and bloating. Enzymes can also alleviate fatigue, poor digestion, sugar cravings, irritability, frequent headaches, poor memory, recurring depression, vaginal infections, menstrual difficulties, prostatitis, urinary tract infections, psoriasis, cold extremities, arthritis like symptoms, weight gain or difficulty losing weight, acid reflux, mineral deficiency, acidosis, brain fog, and overly acidic conditions in the body.

The Integrative Health and Energy Center uses natural plant based enzymes from Theramedix, a respected health supplements provider. These enzymes are not sold in stores and are the highest quality plant based enzymes on the market. Theramedix produces enzymes only. Plant based enzymes are grown from Aspergillus. Aspergillus is a fungus grown in a laboratory setting on plants such as soy and barley. This fungus is a non-pathogenic pharmaceutical species and is free of mycelium contamination. They are called plant based, microbial and fungal. Of all the choices, plant based enzymes are the most active. In their manufacture, removal of the Aspergillus leaves only the enzyme. Aspergillus enzymes have a strong record of safe use in the food industry, and are considered food by the FDA. These enzymes can be taken with meals to aid in digestion of all food, or they may also be taken following meals to meet needs beyond digestion. Plant enzymes are not disposed of as if the body has no need for them. They exit only after there is no more activity left in them to do their work.

The following is a summary of the plant-based enzymes:

  • Amylase (carbohydrase): Breaks down carbohydrates such as starch and glycogen, and polysaccarides in units.
  • Bromelain: Breaks down protein and is beneficial for reducing normal inflammation in the body.
  • Catalase: Breaks hydrogen peroxide down into water and oxygen. This is one of the most potent antioxidants.
  • Cellulase: Breaks down cellulose and chitin (chitin is cellulose like fiber found in the cell with Candida). It helps free nutrients in both fruits and vegetables.
  • Lactase: Breaks down lactose (milk sugar) used for lactose intolerance.
  • Lipase: Breaks down lipids and improves fat utilization.

Refer to Integrative Health and Energy Center's Product Page for more information on enzymes and to find out which ones may be needed to improve your health. All healthy aging programs should involve enzymes, which are a natural hormone replacement without the use of prescription drugs.
